How To Carefully Pick the Best Safe for Your Home

You may have some documents you need to protect or it may be jewelry or similar expensive items. And, although a spy camera can capture the burglar robbing the house, putting your most important items into a safer place will be a smart decision. And one such great place is a home safe.

Here are some things you should know about home safes:

Some are built very well to protect the items or documents under the most extreme circumstances. It would be a good idea to invest in a higher quality safe, because it will pay off in the event of a fire or break in.

One of the most important features of a safe is that it can protect your documents in the event of a fire. Imagine that you've just put all your company's documents, or personal documents, in your office desk drawer. If your catches fire they could be destroyed. However, if you put all these documents into a fire resistant safe, you would have nothing to worry about. There are fire safes that can protect up to 2 hours in a hot fire.

Safes are tested before they're released to the market. A fire safe should hold the temperature inside below 350 degrees Fahrenheit for a certain amount of time. Above that temperature, the paper starts to burn. Fireproof safes work by releasing steam to keep the temperature low.
However, that moisture could damage video tapes, CDs or DVDs.

In that case, there are fireproof safes that use a different construction and technology to protect Cds and DVDs. These safes are called media fire safes. They use dry insulation to keep the temperature low. These safes can protect papers and computer backups. One of the options available is the mixed media file cabinet line which is the preferred choice for both paper and computer record protection. Available in 2,3, or 4 drawer models, they resemble regular file cabinets. You can choose to have media protection drawers or fire rated drawers for paper records, or both. The paper storage drawers are tested and rated by UL to be Class 350, indicating internal temperatures stay below 350°F when exterior temperatures reach 1700°F. During the same 1700°F test, media drawers were UL classified to maintain an internal temperature below 125°F without exceeding the 80 percent humidity level. This stringent standard is required to protect computer media.
It makes sense to do your research and talk to the professionals. It may cost more in the long run, but the payback will be if you have a fire or breakin. Don't be a miser when purchasing a safe. It's better a little more, and be sure that your jewelry, documents, CD's or money are kept safe, even in case of fire.
